Executive Director for Conservation International-Guyana

 

The Executive Director of Conservation International-Guyana (CI-Guyana) ensures the strategic, technical, financial and operational integrity of CI’s Guyana programme. The Executive Director leads a team of national staff and is the legal representative of CI in the country. As such, the Executive Director is responsible for overseeing and coordinating all work funded and implemented in the country by CI. The Executive Director reports to the Senior Vice President of the Americas Field Division and is a member of the Americas Field Division Management Team (CMT).

The Executive Director provides strategic and programmatic direction for the country program, proactively identifying opportunities and trends for the achievement of CI’s institutional goals. S/he is responsible for senior-level program oversight and ensuring that program strategies, initiatives and outcomes advance CI’s priorities.  Duties are complex and include leading the design, implementation and integration of program strategies throughout the country program and aligned with CI global priorities. The Executive Director provides broad programmatic, project, monitoring and technical oversight and continuously engages key internal and external partners critical to program success. S/he represents CI in the country and has a key role in building alliances, a central focus for CI strategy.  The Executive Director ensures that CI’s work is presented effectively to donors and key stakeholders to ensure strategic and sustainable partnerships.

 

Reporting to the Senior Vice President for CI’s Americas Field Division, the Executive Director ensures compliance with CI policies, program and funding agreements and local requirements. Additionally, s/he is responsible for managing the country program and all its component projects, leading and motivating the team, raising funds and managing financial and other resources.  S/he also ensures that the program is integrated with CI’s strategic fundraising and partnership goals and works in collaboration with CI headquarters-based technical and operations units to support the needs of the Guyana program. 

 

The Executive Director directly manages staff, interdisciplinary teams, and/or outside partners. S/he works with a high degree of independence and serves as a technical expert in CI’s multidisciplinary approach of conservation.  S/he exercises a high level of creativity and strategic thinking to efficiently manage the country program and build local staff and partner capacity, within environments that are complex and full of challenges. 

 

The principal duties of the Executive Director are to:

·         Define the strategic direction of the Guyana program.

·         Build alliances and promote national level inter-institutional coordination with public and private entities at the Ministerial/Director level.

·         Advise national government entities on key themes and decisions related to conservation, as well as on the creation, adoption and implementation of policies.

·         Fundraise to bring financial resources to ensure sustainability of the Guyana program in coordination with Americas regional and headquarters-based units.

·         Supervise project implementation and timely execution by the Guyana team and any grantees

·         Build, maintain and promote the professional development of Guyana’s team to main a high level of motivation and performance, while ensuring all CI policies and values are adhered to. 

 

 

Key Responsibilities

·         Build alliances and promote national level inter-institutional coordination with public and private entities at the Ministerial/Director level.

·         Advise national government entities on key themes and decisions related to conservation, as well as on the creation, adoption and implementation of policies.

·         Fundraise to bring financial resources to ensure sustainability of the Guyana program in coordination with Americas regional and headquarters-based units.

·         Supervise project implementation and timely execution by the Guyana team and any grantees

·         Build, maintain and promote the professional development of Guyana’s team, ensuring a healthy and safe workplace environment and excellence of all CI-Guyana Operations 

·         Lead in a transparent and participatory way, encouraging the team to our one CI approach and collaborative approach with regional and global internal partners.

 

Required Qualifications

·         Master's degree (or equivalent of) \ in biology, environmental studies, natural resources management geography or a field related to conservation.

·         Minimum of 10 years of experience with conservation NGO preferably in developing countries or in relation to them.

·         Minimum of 10 years experience (in excess of degree requirements stated above) of progressively responsible experience in strategic planning and programmatic evaluation as well as in information analysis, sythesis, management, monitoring and report development.

·         Specific experience in supporting programmatic planning by linking strategic plans and workplans.

·         Project management experience, including management of substantial project/program budget.

·         Demonstrable success in fundraising.

·         Demonstrated ability to achieve program goals with a high level of creativity and strategic thinking, to efficiently manage, and to build local capacity within extremely complex, challenging environments

·         Demonstrated capacity to lead and supervise a team.

·         Strong communication skills, preferably writing skills capable of peer-review publishing.

·         Self-starter, willing to take initiative on solving problems and providing follow-on assistance.

·         Ability to negotiate and resolve conflicts in collaborative teamwork and in meetings.

·         Flexibility of assumption of responsibility and strong interpersonal skills.

·         Strong organizational and financial skills required.

·         Excellent communication skills, including fluency in languages relevant to the America’s region, major donors and international partners: English required, spanish a plus

 

Supervisory responsibilities/Authority allocated

·         Supervise a team of technical and administrative staff based in Guyana

·         The Executive Director has decision making authority in regards to programmatic, budgetary and strategic issues in Guyana

 

Working conditions

·         This position is based in CI’s office in Georgetown, Guyana

·         This position includes extensive national (field visits) and international travels (internal and external meetings) cumulating to around 25% of the time.
