Graphic Design/Communications Internship


The Communications Department at Resources for the Future (RFF), an internationally recognized research institution that focuses on energy, environmental, and natural resource policy, is currently seeking a creative, organized, and energetic student or recent graduate to join its team as a Graphic Design/Communications Intern.


The intern will work closely with the Deputy Director for Government and Public Affairs on a variety of projects ranging from preparing and revising RFF marketing materials to working with print shops and other vendors as well as other tasks depending on skill set. The intern will participate in team and project-specific meetings, and may work with other members of the Communications team on various projects. He or she will also help manage RFF’s reception desk. This is an outstanding opportunity for a young professional looking to gain experience, build a portfolio, and learn more about communications from within an organization.


This is a paid internship at $10.00 per hour. There is a 15 hour/week minimum and a 35 hour/week maximum. The position offers flexible hours, Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. There is a 3-month initial term, which can be extended depending on performance and the needs of the organization.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop ads, invitations, marketing materials, banners, and other materials.
  • Prepare materials for print and work with vendors to print products.
  • Create and edit graphics and infographics for print and web publishing.
  • Conduct image research, purchase images, and prepare images in Photoshop.
  • Ensure created materials adhere to the RFF Branding Guide.
  • Assist with events, projects, and outreach of the Communications Department, as assigned.
  • Staff reception desk, including answering and directing incoming calls, attending to staff and visitor needs, and representing the organization in a professional manner.
  • Support organizational goals with office work, as necessary.



  • Good interpersonal communication skills and strong organizational skills.
  • Contemporary design aesthetic; strong design sense for clean, academic-style layouts.
  • Must be able to take creative criticism and refine designs incorporating outside feedback.
  • Ability to interact effectively and respectfully with vendors.
  • Working toward or recently graduated from a degree program at a university or college (major in graphic design or related fields preferred).
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Proficient in Adobe design suite (InDesign, Photoshop).
  • Keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage work independently.
  • Flexibility and a good sense of humor.
  • An interest in environmental economics research and policy analysis is a plus.


RFF is located near Dupont Circle at 1616 P Street NW, DC. RFF does not pay transportation or parking costs.
