Medical Coding Manager

University Emergency Medicine Foundation (UEMF) is the academic emergency medicine physician practice plan of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University.  As a non-profit foundation, UEMF is committed to its mission and vision of academic and research support.

UEMF provides emergency department staffing for Rhode Island Hospital, the only Level I trauma center in this region; Hasbro Children’s Hospital, Rhode Island’s only children’s specialty hospital; The Miriam Hospital, a leading community teaching hospital and Newport Hospital, a community Magnet Hospital.

The Medical Coding Manager will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the department and for supervising the medical coding staff.  The Coding Manager will maintain and develop systems, processes, and work flows to ensure the timely and accurate recording of encounter information.  

 

The job responsibilities include:

  • Manages UEMF’s day-to-day operation related to medical coding procedures/systems.
  • Monitors coder productivity and accuracy.  Develops training and improvement plans as needed. 
  • Coordinates and oversees coding platform(s), monthly closing and related functions; implements changes to systems as necessary. This includes updating the database to accommodate annual coding changes.
  • Responsible for supervision of the Medical Coding Team including but not limited to: assisting HR in hiring qualified candidates, training new coders, conducting annual performance evaluations, establishing goals for staff, providing mentorship and coaching to the team, and recommending disciplinary related personnel actions.
  • Works with the Hospital’s Medical Records and Chart Processing Departments to assure timely receipt of all un-coded charts

The required qualifications for the position are:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Information, Healthcare Administration, or related field with at least 5 years-experience in Medical Coding and at least 3 years in a management role.
  • Certified Professional Coder Certificate (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist- Physician based Certificate (CCS-P), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or a related certificate required.
  • Current knowledge of ICD-10 CM and CPT-4 coding, billing, medical terminology, and compliance standards required. 
  • Must submit a background release form and demonstrate proof of being free from disqualifying information.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and able to communicate with staff, senior leadership team, and providers.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize a variety of tasks to support departmental needs.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and access to an insured vehicle as some transportation may be required.
  • Experience with electronic medical records required.  Knowledge of Epic and Nextgen preferred.
