Advanced Practice Provider

Brown Emergency Medicine (Brown EM) is the academic emergency medicine physician practice plan of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University.  Brown EM provides emergency department staffing for Rhode Island Hospital, the only Level I trauma center in this region; Hasbro Children’s Hospital, Rhode Island’s only children’s specialty hospital; The Miriam Hospital, a leading community teaching hospital and Newport Hospital, a community Magnet Hospital.  Brown EM member physicians and providers treat over 250,000 patients per year at our 4 clinical sites, drawing patients from Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut.  As a non-profit foundation, Brown EM is committed to its mission and vision of academic and research support.  Brown EM offers an excellent benefits package, including 85-90% employer-paid medical and dental, vision, employer-paid life insurance, long-term disability, paid time off, paid holidays and generous 401(k) retirement plan. 

Brown EM is looking for a full-time, 36-40 hours per week Advanced Practice Provider.  The job will entail working in multiple areas of the department including, urgent, fast-track and observation areas in conjunction with board certified emergency physicians and residents in a teaching environment.

Other responsibilities may include:

  • Providing diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventative health care services
  • Take medical histories
  • Examine and treat patients
  • Order and interpret laboratory tests
  • Order and interpret diagnostic imaging
  • Diagnose patients
  • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
  • Treat minor injuries
  • Suture, splint, cast

The qualifications for the position are:

  • Master’s or Bachelors’ Degree in Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner, with a minimum of 1-2 years of experience, preferably in an emergency department setting.
  • National Certifying Commission of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) certificate preferred or equivalent Nurse Practitioner certificate.
  • Satisfactory completion of approved training program and certification by National Licensing Boards for Physician Assistant’s or equivalent Nurse Practitioner training.
  • Must be a credentialed member of the Rhode Island Hospital Medical Staff.
  • Must have the ability to handle confidential information in a professional manner.
  • Must have the ability to prioritize and multi-task.
  • Must submit a background release form and demonstrate proof of no disqualifying information.
  • Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Professional interpersonal and exemplary organization skills required.
  • Must have computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office Application, including Word, Excel, Power Point, Access, and Outlook.

All practice is performed under the supervision of the physician or alternate and in accordance with written policies and protocols developed and approved by the Emergency Department, the Medical Executive Committee, and the Board of Rhode Island Hospital.

Successful candidate must submit to a background release form, demonstrate proof of being free from disqualifying information and must possess a driver’s license and access to an insured vehicle as some transportation may be required.
