Brown EM is currently seeking a highly motivated and professional Accounts Receivable Specialist within our emergency medicine Billing department.  Under the general direction of the Billing Operations Manager, the Accounts Receivable Specialist is responsible to conduct independent review and analysis of all areas of Account Receivable.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Works with insurers to effectively resolve issues for claims over 30 days old to maximize reimbursement.
  • Processes electronic billing and billing edits and payments.
  • Responsible for posting and processing denied claims.
  • Provides follow-up on account receivable files.
  • On a regular basis, audits the accuracy of randomly selected medical claims including diagnosis codes, insurance eligibility, and timeliness of filing.
  • Advises supervisor of findings and works with appropriate staff to resolve/correct any issues.
  • Works with external auditors.
  • Enters patient billing data information and related payments for all insurances into the practice management system. 
  • Researches and responds to status of patient eligibility for hospital charges.
  • Verifies insurance coverage for all third-party liability illnesses/injuries.
  • Performs clerical functions including typing, filing, and maintaining related correspondences.
  • Notifies supervisor of any credentialing/re-credentialing issues that may arise.
  • Responsible for answering phones for the Billing Department.
  • Responds to inquiries and requests from all customers/patients and resolves as authorized.  Responsible for making billing deposits and providing courier services to bank if needed.
  • Reviews delinquent accounts recommended for write-offs to ensure conformance to applicable collection policies.

The qualifications for the position are:

  • Must have a Health Claim Specialist Certificate, Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or related certificate with a minimum of 2-4 years of related accounts receivable patient billing experience.  In lieu of certificate, a minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent with at least 4-5 years of related billing experience.
  • Knowledge of ICD-9 CM, CPT-4, ICD-10 coding and medical terminology is required.
  • Must submit a background release form and demonstrate proof of being free from disqualifying information.
  • Excellent verbal communication/customer service skills required.
  • Good computer/clerical skills are required.
  • Mentors colleagues within scope of responsibility.
