Description

Nature of Work

This is manual, semi‑skilled labor work in the construction, maintenance and repair of county properties, facilities and public works or utilities projects.  Employees in this class perform a variety of manual labor tasks requiring some job‑acquired skills in specialized fields.  Work differs from the Maintenance 1 class in that assignments include a wider variety of tasks involving more advanced skills or training and duties that require the incumbent to complete tasks with less direct supervision in a more independent manner.  The incumbent reports to a supervisor or designee.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 1 year of general construction, maintenance, repair work or park site operations; or
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.

Additional Requirements

  • Candidate to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License within 6 months of employment or employment may be terminated.
  • Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations.

Highly Desirable

  • A valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License “B” at time of hire.

Illustrative Tasks (These are examples and are not all inclusive.)

  • Services, operates and maintains the facility, electrical and mechanical equipment.
  • Repairs/replaces electrical switches, outlets, light fixtures, plumbing fixtures and other building and facilities appurtenances.
  • Maintains facility's landscaping and irrigation system.
  • Performs limited carpentry and woodworking functions and related work as required or assigned.
  • Performs related work as assigned or required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of tools, methods and materials used in general maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of methods and tools used in rough carpentry and cement work.
  • Ability to recognize safety hazards and take precautionary methods to protect self and others.
  • Ability to meet the public, give information regarding facilities and regulations and provide for the safety of visitors.
  • Ability to read basic drawings, blueprints and diagrams.
  • Ability to do heavy manual labor for extended periods, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.
