Sibanye Stillwater Mining Company is the only U.S. producer of platinum group metals (PGMs) and the largest primary producer of PGMs outside of South Africa and the Russian Federation. Sibanye Stillwater Mining Company is engaged in the development, extraction, processing, smelting and refining of PGMs from a geological formation in southern Montana known as the J-M Reef and from the recycling of spent catalytic converters. The J-M Reef is the only known significant source of PGMs in the United States and the highest-grade PGM resource in the world.

General Foreman – Smelter Operations

Location: Precious Metals Smelter – Columbus, MT

POSITION SUMMARY:  This position will function as a Smelter Operations General Foreman.  Primary supervisory and leadership responsibilities include, but are not limited to direct supervision for smelter staff and hourly personnel, establishing and maintaining safety and production work standards, continued optimization of operational systems, understands and can articulate the specific short term and the general, longer-term goals of the company, budget development and adherence, and a champion of on-going project initiatives.  


  • Provide leadership for safe and productive operations.
  • Coach and mentor the Smelter leaders in accordance with SMC leadership qualities.
  • Regularly interact with the workforce, demonstrating high level leadership qualities.
  • Work with site senior leadership team in continuing development of a focused, engaged culture throughout the organization.
  • Establish and execute short and long term planning strategies that support the growth of the operation.
  • Develop and execute strategic workforce planning.
  • Foster cooperation, collaboration and innovation to ensure that site production and development goals are understood and efficiently supported. 
  • Lead Smelter operations team to ensure maximum productivity and equipment availability by safely optimizing operating systems and procedures.
  • Be pro-active in all aspects of the operation; safety, environmental, effective and efficient utilization of resources, productivity, Continuous Improvement initiatives, and teamwork across the site.
  • Support Safety and Health Management and Environmental systems and regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain a productive labor relations environment, minimizing unnecessary conflict.
  • Develop and communicate site goals and initiatives in cooperation with other site managers.



  • Minimum 5 years of relevant processing plant experience in a supervisory, lead man or equivalent position
  • Knowledge of maintenance procedures and machinery functions in an industrial environment
  • Ability to communicate with technical specialists and to interpret technical drawings and specification documents
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Leadership qualities including: character, teamwork, communication, business sense, and vision
  • Well established communication, interpersonal, and record keeping skills
  • Proficient in computer applications (Microsoft Office Suite to include Word and Excel)
  • Experience and understanding of health, safety, and environmental regulations



  • Ability to analytically and rationally make decisions
  • Experience with OSHA regulations
  • Understanding of Process Operations
  • Experience with Critical Task Analysis and the writing of Standard Operating Procedures
