About Piper Jaffray Merchant Banking
Piper Jaffray Merchant Banking (“PJMB”) invests in late stage growth companies that operate in one of the industry sectors covered by Piper Jaffray’s equity research and investment banking groups. PJMB focuses on companies that have demonstrated high growth potential, need additional capital to fund their growth and have a well-defined path to liquidity within a three- to five-year timeframe.
The Analyst Program
The Merchant Banking analyst program is a rigorous two-year program for exceptionally qualified individuals. Our analysts work closely with the partners in Merchant Banking to make a real impact through involvement in all facets of the private equity process. Duties include:
Creating and iterating complex financial models
Conducting financial valuations and creating return models for potential new investments
Working with senior members of Merchant Banking to evaluate and conduct due diligence on potential new investments
Preparing investment memoranda
Preparing quarterly valuation reports
Preparing quarterly and annual reports for our limited partners
Maintaining the Merchant Banking deal pipeline and transaction records

Analyst Training & Development
Our analyst program begins in June with three and a half weeks of rigorous training at our headquarters in Minneapolis. New analysts in Investment Banking, Equity Capital Markets and Merchant Banking attend from offices around the world, including Minneapolis, New York, San Francisco, Charlotte, Chicago, Boston and London. Training is designed to give analysts a broad understanding of our firm and its capabilities, as well as a strong technical foundation. Technical topics covered include accounting, valuation, financial modeling and general computer skills.
Numerous social and team-building activities take place throughout training to help new employees begin their careers with strong relationships among their peers.
Analyst Career Path
Piper Jaffray is dedicated to supporting analysts as they complete their two-year commitment. Analysts interested in pursuing opportunities outside of the firm will have the opportunity to participate in a program designed to provide information and create networking opportunities to transition to private equity, investment banking, corporate development and business school.
What We Look For
Piper Jaffray seeks dedicated and motivated Spring/Summer 2019 graduates possessing demonstrated academic achievement (generally, a GPA above 3.5) as well as leadership, organizational and teamwork skills. We are also open to candidates who had a year of work experience in the financial industry and are looking to make a transition. The ability to create innovative solutions, articulate complex ideas and adapt to a rapidly changing environment is essential. Analysts must be able to work well under pressure and manage multiple projects. The most successful analysts have taken courses in finance and accounting and are very familiar with financial modeling.
